Without special approval, car-and-trailer combinations in Germany are generally limited to 80 km/h. With the so-called 100 km/h approval ("Tempo 100"), you can travel considerably faster on motorways and dual carriageways – a real time saver on long trips. Here's an overview of the requirements.

What exactly does the 100 km/h approval mean?

The 100 km/h approval isn't a property a trailer automatically has – it's an official permit for a specific combination of tow vehicle and trailer. It's based on a general type approval or an individual inspection, and is shown by a round sticker with the number "100" on the rear of the tow vehicle.

Technical requirements for the trailer

In general, trailers for 100 km/h need a suitable braking system, adequately rated suspension (steel-spring or air suspension meeting the relevant standards), and tyres rated for the corresponding speed.
