Winterising a garden tractor: getting it through the off-season

After the last cut in autumn, a garden tractor faces several months of standing idle. Preparing it properly means starting the new season in spring without unpleasant surprises.

Remove or maintain the battery

A battery loses charge over winter even unused, and can be damaged by frost. Ideally remove the battery, store it somewhere frost-free, and top it up occasionally with a trickle charger.

Prepare the fuel system

Old petrol left in the tank over winter can form deposits that clog the carburettor. Either run the tank as empty as possible before storage, or add a fuel stabiliser so the engine starts reliably in spring.

Clean the blades and mower deck

Thoroughly remove grass clippings and soil from the mower deck to prevent corrosion and odour. It's also worth checking blade sharpness – dull blades can be conveniently sharpened or replaced during the off-season.

Check tyre pressure and storage location

Increase tyre pressure slightly above the summer value to avoid flat spots during long storage, and keep the garden tractor somewhere dry and, ideally, frost-protected.
