Hydrostatic drive on a garden tractor: the advantages it brings

Hydrostatic drive has become standard on modern garden tractors like the GT 92 and the GT 102 Comfort. Compared to a classic manual gearbox, it brings concrete advantages in daily use.

Stepless speed control

Instead of discrete gears, hydrostatic drive lets you control speed steplessly via a pedal. That allows fine adjustment to different terrain or lawn conditions without fiddly gear changes.

No clutching, no stalling

Since no manual clutching is required, there's no risk of stalling the engine when setting off. That makes hydrostatic drive especially pleasant for inexperienced users or households where several people take turns driving.

Smoother direction changes

Switching between forward and reverse, hydrostatic drive works noticeably more smoothly than a manual gearbox, which increases comfort especially when frequently manoeuvring around trees or beds.

Are there any downsides?

Hydrostatic drive is usually somewhat more expensive to buy than a simple gearbox, and can in theory show slightly more efficiency loss under very heavy load. For typical garden tractor use, though, the comfort advantages clearly outweigh this.

Conclusion

Hydrostatic drive makes operating a garden tractor noticeably more relaxed and suits plots with frequent manoeuvring or multiple drivers especially well. Both our garden tractor models come with this drive type as standard.
