750 kg or 2,000 kg tipper trailer: what payload do you need?

A tipper trailer with a 750 kg gross weight and a 2,000 kg model look similar at first glance – but choosing the right class affects licence requirements, the right tow vehicle and everyday practicality.

750 kg: unbraked, no extra test

Trailers up to 750 kg gross weight may be built unbraked and can be towed with a standard category B licence without an additional trailer test, as long as the combined weight of tow vehicle and trailer doesn't exceed 3,500 kg. This class is usually enough for occasional transport of soil, green waste or smaller amounts of rubble.

2,000 kg: more payload, but braked

A rear tipper like the HK 2000 with a 2,000 kg gross weight, on the other hand, needs its own braking system. In return, payload increases significantly, which quickly pays off for regular transport of larger quantities – for landscaping work, say, or frequent trips to the recycling centre.

Check your licence and combined weight

From 750 kg braked trailer weight and a combined weight over 3,500 kg, you'll usually need code 96 or category BE. Before buying, always check which licence category you hold and how much trailer weight your tow vehicle is rated for in its registration document.
